专利创造法是指发现原有的专利的缺陷，通过研究和改进，有了新的创造和发明的方法。
爱迪生善于利用原有的专利产品
爱迪生发明电灯、留声机、、电话、电影、电报机、发电机、蓄电池、打字机、磁铁矿分离机、压力表等等。据不完全统计,自从他发明第一台自动数票机的一八六九年至一九一０年,他一共领得一千三百二十八种发明专利权,约计在此时期,每十一天他就有一个发明。那么他神奇的秘诀是什么呢？答案是：他善于利用原有的专利产品。
爱迪生是1847年出生，而电灯的发明专利是1845年英国J.W.斯塔尔注册的。（电灯的发明比爱迪生出生早两年）为什么J.W.斯塔尔无人知晓呢？因为他制造的电灯价格惊人地高，约10万英镑一个。英国另一个科学家斯旺根据这个专利技术研究出降低成本的方法，采用含有炭材料的物质的灯丝，并将技术成果撰写成为论文在美国的《科学美国人》杂志发表，爱迪生看到这份材料后，万分高兴，他使用了1600种材料做了成千上万次实验，终于试验出一种竹片烧成碳丝，可以使用1200小时，而且价格十分低，每个灯泡约十美元，并成功地在全世界推广使用。继爱迪生之后,1909年,美国柯进而奇发明了用钨丝代替炭丝,使电灯效率猛增。从此,电灯跃上新台阶,日光灯、碘钨灯等形形色色的灯如雨后春笋般登上照明舞台。
发明家爱迪生如果不是无休止的钻研,不停顿的改进,那么他的许多发明创造便不会日趋更科学,更完善。他发明的留声机是这样,白热电灯也是这样,蓄电池、有声电影等等,都是这样。正如他在白热电灯实验成功后所说："没有一个发明是十全十美的, 白热电灯到今日何尝是例外。有光而无热, 这才是理想的光,而现在离这个境界还远呢！"爱迪生虚怀若谷, 永远进取的精神, 是值得赞扬的
