Once after the action of China flying warplanes over Taiwan, the new President Joe Biden affirms his standing on the issue between China and Taiwan. The US calls the latest warning issued by the Chinese government to be “unfortunate.”
For a long time, the topic of whether Taiwan is a sovereign state has been debated. While China views democratic Taiwan as a breakaway-province, Taiwan considers itself a sovereign nation that has their own constitution, military, and vote-elected leaders.
Since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, the Chinese government has been in an attempt to limit Taiwan’s international activities. Although Taiwan is officially recognized by a number of countries, many others have been pressured by the Chinese Communist Party to not have any commercial and informal links to Taiwan. Despite the pressure, the US Navy has been an important guarantor of Taiwan’s de facto independence since the fled of the nationalist government to Taiwan after the Communist victory.
John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesperson responding to the contemporary threats stated that tensions between China and Taiwan “need to lead to anything like a confrontation.” He reaffirms that the United States military would be supportive of Taiwan’s self-defense.
As the Chinese war jets have continued causing “large incursions,” the new US administration is expected to oversee China over a wide range of issues including human rights, border disputes, and international relationships.
